DonnaTella’s Dish| April 28 Edition
Now if you’ve only seen the Christina Aguilera/Cher Hollywoodized take on the world of strip tease, you need to check some of these events out. However, I’m giving you the reader the benefit of the doubt that you are probably better versed than that and knowing the community we live in, you know at least one burlesque or boylesque star. Probably more, honestly. If you thought drag queens/kings were fun, just you wait til you hang out with some of these sparkly creatures. Their love of their art, appreciation of their history and support for each other is just astounding and such a breath of fresh air. Let’s dive in, shall we!?
Thursday, April 30th is the Morbid Curiositease Compendium of Oddities down at the Columbia City Theatre. This circus, sideshow of acts may just shock and amaze. Some of which might also dance into the dark spaces of your dreams, spooky! If you’re into some of the glitz and glam of the circus and loved yourself that last season of AHS this might just be for you! The performers themselves are even taking on various roles you would find at the circus, who doesn’t love a themed evening?! Seating prices vary with some goodies for those choosing top tier and let me tell you, those goodies are sure to be worth it! Plus I would assume you’ll have the best view in the house. Doors at 8PM, show at 8:30PM, $19. More here!
This and every Saturday at The Pink Door it’s Cabaret and Burlesque Behind the Pink Door! Doors are at 9p and the show is at 11p, dinner and a show is what you will get and cover is $20 (dinner cost not included). Almost sounds like going to Le Faux, except this evening of glamour is 21+ only and first come first served! This intimate space always sells out quickly and is a facet of the Pike Place Market. Why have you ever even noticed as you walk South on Pike place that Waxie Moon is fabulously painted overhead on the side of one of the buildings? I believe it’s right above the “original” Starbucks, I never seem to miss it. However I must be honest, in all my years living here I’ve yet to go to The Pink Door and or this show and I’m gonna!
My next pick is Monday night’s only burlesque review in town! Shake off those start of the week blahs with some shimmy and strip down at Naked City Brewery & Taphouse for Revelry! Naked City has been brewing and serving the most delicious and delectable beers since 2007, and has been operating their constantly rotating 24 tap pub & restaurant since 2009! Come for dinner and drinks, then join the cast for the show! Fresh talent and local favorites will be taking the stage and making your Monday a bit brighter, mostly from the shine of their sequins and rhinestones! General and VIP seating available! Get ya tickets here.
How does this sound for a show? 8 performers, 12 possible props, 16 possible songs performed live by Seattle’s only electro-swing band Good Co. If you want to see some silly mayhem go down, then I suggest you get to Re-Bar on May 8th for Wheel of Tease: Improvised Burlesque! Another mash up of fresh faces and established stars of the scene, these performers are in the hands of the audience led by Sir Eddie van Glam to make their picks unleashing “kamikaze burlesque.” I can just imagine how silly and fun this show gets, almost like watching a drag queen come out for her number only to be duped by the DJ pressing the wrong track (and that’s usually and hopefully an accident).
This is really just a small taste of the BQ scene and I highly suggest checking more of their events out. Not only that but following this fabulous universe of characters on social media and even meeting them! If you want some directions to be pointed in to find these sparkly special beings on the Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and so on, hit me up! Even being a drag queen I’ve felt like knowing people in this community and working with them has helped to better me as a performer and a community member.
